Test Kitchen

print pdf
The LF:TK Test Kitchen is a living archive and locus of activity around the LF:TK project. A process-based approach is taken to creation of recipes, developed within a laboratory setting that becomes progressively more public. Staged in presentation spaces such as a gallery the normal workflow of private artist studio to public exhibition space is inverted.

In the Test Kitchen, experiments are performed and new recipes invented for networked social spaces. As a functional laboratory, the environment is filled with ordinary physical objects for study and possible transformation into telecommunication interfaces through augmentation of electronic parts, screens, speakers, sensors and motors.

The public can participate in the experimental process through guided workshops, movie screenings, food and telekinetic cooking events.

"The front room at Spectrum Gallery looks like the aftermath of an electrician's dinner party. Kitchen utensils and electrical wires are strewn across the table while spoons clatter on glasses and bottle openers jump up and down"

Jars are filled with toys, brushes, funnels, cookies, beer caps, playing cards, keys, coffee cups, electronics parts, wire, batteries, cell phones, in random combinations. Jars are also filled with things like motors, cables, glue, tape, solder, wire, and other raw materials. Dvds playing on small monitors are placed on the shelves and distributed throughout the space. Televisions display how-to videos for building networked objects, soldering an electronic board, a video diary of Wireless Amsterdam, a fast motion of hands assembling, objects in motion, video documentation (produced on-the-fly) of events from connected hot spots."
